This book has ment a lot to me. I remember gobbling it hungrily up right after I bought it while going by bus to my hometown. Together with my husband we were just going through the infertility treatment and weren't particulary happy about it. I was suffering mostly mentally being deprived by so far unsuccessful IVF attempts, not to mention the fact that I found it unpleasant from the physical point of view.
While reading the book by Hana Konecna I slowly gained a new hope even though I must admit I was crying myself through the passages with personal stories, which conclude the book. But later on I realised that this cry was of a cathartic nature. I realised first then that however our story ends it is up to me to decide how I feel about it.
It was also very helpful to learn from the personal commentaries how men cope with the problem of their own infertility or of infertility of their wives. Women are used talking about their feelings so one knows a lot about how they tackle (or not) this specific problem. However, men are usually silent which can mislead us so we end up thinking that they don't care.
But practically I benfited most from the part of the book which was devoted to the substantial list and explanation of all examinations and treatments the infertile couple may undergo. I realized from that list that we maybe capitulated too early and put up with what we have been told in the center of assisted reproduction, e. g. that due to the poor quality of my husband's sperm the spontaneous conception is in our case impossible.
After reading the book I decided to contact the author to thank her. We met and she eventually provided me with the contact of two specialised institutions. Together with my husband we started another treatment at these institutions aside of the IVF. To cut it short after two years of andrological and imunological treatment I concieved spontaneously and in 2007 gave birth to our healthy daughter. Of course I think this book is "to blame" so I could not resist writing my impressions...

Product Description:
This book has been written to provide hope, support, motivation and focus for couples who are trying to conceive a child. It has evolved from a body of research carried out in the form of hundreds of interviews with childless couples, their doctors, and fertility specialists. Dr Konecna, (who was for many years childless herself and therefore has a profound empathy and understanding of the issues) is able to consider the deeply emotional subject of involuntary childlessness both from the scientific viewpoint of a professional obstetrician and from the humanitarian aspect of a sympathetic mother herself.
The book does discuss the various medical conditions which cause infertility, but it is written in an easy to understand style. Far more significant, effective and entertaining is Dr Konecnas analysis of childlessness by using examples of biblical stories, traditional folk songs and fairy tales. The content of each chapter is interlaced with case studies from these sources, which reveal the timeless nature of childlessness and the pain and heartache it causes.
Paradoxically, the tone and message of the book is upbeat and uplifting. The interviewees relate their experiences, feelings and hopes to Dr Konecna, she is able to discuss their circumstances dispassionately, and she offers a positive viewpoint on even the most desperate situation. On the Quest for a Child succeeds on a number of levels the medical problems causing the inability to conceive, the psychological suffering endured, the remedies and solutions to be considered, and the legal/ethical issues to be confronted all are dealt with thoroughly, and across an international, multi-cultural range of cases.
It is hoped that this book will bring comfort to anyone who is going through the pain of childlessness, but will also be read and valued by medical practitioners, specialists, psychologists, social workers and allied health professionals who deal with childlessness in their daily work.
