(More customer reviews)A week ago I had a hysterectomy, with removal of the ovaries and "plumbing" repairs, all related to pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence. I had ordered this book months ago, in preparation for the planned surgery. So, now that I have planned for and actually had the surgery, I am in a position to give an opinion on this book. YOU MUST READ IT!It is full of all of the questions, and more, that you would want to ask, and it is written in a very understandable way. Now that I have actually experienced the surgery, I have gone back to read the sections specifically on surgery and my problems, and the book is right on target! Everything from the description of what it is like to go into the operating room, to anesthesia, nursing care, etc., is clearly and directly stated right here for you. The book has additional chapters on other topics which weren't relevant to my current medical situation, but you can bet your bottom dollar that I am holding on to this book for future use, as it is so comprehensive. I would unconditionally recommend it!

I've suffered from PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) symptoms since my first period and went from doctor to doctor seeking help.As is typical, I was often told it was in my head.One doctor told me that my problem was: "The size of my ass and the amount of time I sit on it."
Forget that I was thin when the disorder first became debilitating. Another doctor told me that I couldn't have PCOS as I only had one cyst on my ovary--you don't have to have any cysts to have PCOS as Dr. Vliet explains in this book.

Many doctors out there are totally ignorant about PCOS and the complications it causes.A lot of them will put you on progesterone if you're having hormonal problems--though often the problem is estradiol deficiency (I've been there).

For me PCOS caused severe fatigue, depression, hypoglycemia/hyperglycemia, lack of libido, 90 pounds of weight gain, excess body hair, muscle and joint pain, irregular periods, PMS that lasts all month, mood swings, IBS, and many other symptoms. I became an invalid in my mid-20's due to PCOS and the resulting estradiol decline it caused.I was a medical student with a 3.9 GPA but had to discontinue my studies due to the severe fatigue the hormone imbalance caused.

More recently, I've developed high blood pressure, hyperplasia of the uterine lining and heart problems--all complications of PCOS--I'm only 40.

All along, I knew the problem was my hormones, but doctors didn't believe me or didn't know what to do about it.This book was enlightening.I read it and thought: 'Finally there's a medical professional out there who understands.' I was elated!

Luckily, I recently found a doctor who seems to have a good grasp of the disorder (though no one compares to Vliet) and I'm beginning to feel a little better.Nothing can fix the damage that the disorder has done to my body over the years; however, and I wish I could have read a book like this long ago.

A lot of women write to me about hypoglycemia, and I always recommend this book.Again, every woman should read this book.I can't recommend this or Vliet's other books highly enough.I'm grateful to her for her body of work and for helping people understand hormone disorders through these books.

(More customer reviews)Where to begin? Medically, this book is painstakingly accurate. Emotionally, Ms. Ford took such care in covering the many emotional pitfalls of dealing with infertility. Reading this book sometimes felt like sitting with a close friend whose shoulder you could cry on, and she would ALWAYS say the right thing. If you're dealing with infertility, one thing I can promise you is that this book will make you feel less alone.

This book is really wonderful, it is very easy to read and taught me a lot about what endo was and what the different ways to treat it are. I found this book to be really informative.

(More customer reviews)My doctor specializing in endo treatment gave me this book, and I have found it very useful. I also have Mary Lou Ballweg's previous endo book, which is also great.

This Complete Reference compassionately discusses the pain, the symptoms, the medical diagnosis and treatments, immunotherapy and nutrition and how they help decrease symptoms, how endo can affect fertility, connections it may have to cancer, how it impacts menopause, how it affects teenagers...It also has motivating chapters on how we can stay strong and continue to be productive through our endo, but with reassuring messages that if the pain and procedures do affect our energy and mental health, what we can do to manage this stress. It also talks about new research and finally, how important it is to share our experience with other women.

I've had endo for probably over 10 years now. I've had 4 laparoscopies (need another one soon), and I've tried every procedure available. Women need to KNOW that there IS NO CURE. Pregnancy does NOT CURE endo. Some undereducated doctors that do not specialize in this disease mistakenly persuade hundreds of thousands of women to have a child when they may not be ready in hopes of curing their disease. Also, some of the procedures MAY cause temporarily symptom relief, but they WILL NOT CURE you of endo. I've been treated in a clinical trial by the best endo team in the world in Maryland, and with research, one day we may have a cure. At this time, we only know it is a stubborn and sometimes debilitating disease. But it does NOT define us. Surround yourself with supportive friends and family. If your doctor doesn't take the time you need to answer your many questions satisfactorily, find another. Respect your right to the best-possible healthcare. (More customer reviews)While I have only read a handful of books and papers on the topic, I found this to be the most accessible and fun resource among them. As with all the "For Dummies" books, the organization flows easily from one topic to the next, making the book as useful for someone looking for a specific or even random tidbit on the topic, or one looking for a more comprehensive summation of the disease, its treatment, and its outcomes. It covers the basics (symptoms, theories on causes, what it is, comparisons to normal reproductive functioning versus what happens with endo, etc.), and also covers different treatments (mainstream, surgical, drug, and alternative) and what to look for in a doctor. It also helps patients think of what to discuss with the doctor and which questions to ask, which is great, since diagnosis is often delayed 8-15+ years.

While it may not go incredibly in depth on any one aspect of endometriosis or get too deep into the scientific nitty gritty, it gives the reader a wide enough breadth of knowledge to lay the groundwork for further research into serious medical texts and studies. It was, of course, detailed enough for most people and didn't leave me with any unanswered questions. On it's own, it also serves the purpose of educating oneself on the disease and finding ways to approach it and deal with it. This was a fantastic book to read, and I recommend it for both personal and academic research.
