Why Fat Sticks: An Introduction To Insulin Resistance Review

A great book about insulin resistance, what causes it and who has it.It's super easy to read and understand - no big medical jargon to deal with.I've bought several copies for friends and family.Everyone has enjoyed it and has gained insight as to what is attributable to their weight gain and how being insulin resistant is at least, partly responsible. Not only does it explain what insulin resistant is but explains what you can do to correct the situation and avoid the inevitable, destructive path ahead of you - a burned out pancreas and a life of diabetes - if you don't make changes in your life. Great book!I applaud the author!

The PCOS Workbook: Your Guide to Complete Physical and Emotional Health Review

The PCOS Workbook: Your Guide to Complete Physical and Emotional Health

This is the 5th book on PCOS I've purchased on Amazon.com since being diagnosed in May 2009, and it's the first one I felt compelled to review. It is absolutely the best purchase I've made regarding my health. The workbook format is so much more useful for keeping track of my specific levels, what to ask my endocrinologist, and documenting my progress. I love the worksheet for documenting lab results - so useful! For someone who does not come from a clinical background, all this information can be really overwhelming. The author explains everything in detail, but still makes it easy to comprehend. The other books I've read made me more anxious after reading them, while this one made me feel empowered. I love it and have now ordered her other book as well, can't wait for it to arrive.

The PCOS* Protection Plan: How to Cut Your Increased Risk of Diabetes, Heart Disease, Obesity, and High Blood Pressure Review

The PCOS* Protection Plan: How to Cut Your Increased Risk of Diabetes, Heart Disease, Obesity, and High Blood Pressure
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The PCOS Protection Plan is geared towards women who have already been diagnosed with the syndrome and are looking for information about diet and lifestyle changes that can help them manage their symptoms and reduce their risk of future serious health problems.Very little background information about PCOS is provided.

Part One covers the health risks associated with PCOS (diabetes, obesity, heart disease, hypertension, etc.).Causes, risk factors, and warnings signs are discussed.Part Two covers the protection plan: diet and lifestyle changes that can help reduce and control symptoms and future health risks.Part Three covers motivation, medications and alternative therapies, and continuing research.Part Four offers PCOS-friendly recipes. There is also a glossary, extensive lists for resources and further reading, and a good index.

I have just finished reading a copy of this book from the library but I plan to buy it because it will be a very useful resource to have around.I have not yet discussed the protection plan with my doctor, but it does seem quite sound. Some of the advice (eat fewer processed foods, drink more water, etc.) is information that I already knew and have been trying to put into practice. But there is a lot of information that I didn't know (especially regarding how the body processes food and the benefits and dangers of many different nutrients and substances) and the plans for implementing changes and staying motivated are very inspiring to me.

I was diagnosed two years ago, when I was having fertility problems. But I am not overweight and not insulin resistant.Nevertheless, having a plan to follow is very comforting to me in reducing my health risks in the future and doing what I can to minimize my symptoms.

Managing PCOS For Dummies Review

Managing PCOS For Dummies
Average Reviews:

The book has a lot of the reg info on what PCOS is, and spends well over half the book talking about diets and food. It's written by a dietician, and so it's helpful for someone looking for tips on food that you may not find to quite this extent in other books. It offers good tips for eating healthy, and for excersizing.
It does recommend a low GI diet, which is the best diet for PCOS, and talkes exstensively about insulin resistance as well- a great key word for those with PCOS. The book is more like a manual of course, it's a "dummies" series, so it lacks a lot of warmth. It does have some interesting recipes, but like the last review- many of them do contain items you can buy in the US and does seem to be European based.

Positive Options for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Self-Help and Treatment

This book is an easy read and small enough to use as a referance book. It outlines how you can help yourself by changing your diet, adding exercise(along the lines of yoga and pilates), basic vitamin/mineral supplementation, and holistic therapys. For me personally I like to take more of a natural approach if possible before relying on medication and this is perfect. It breaks everthing up into each symptom and how to deal with them individually. There are sections on getting pregnant, getting help from your doctor, and emotional support. It's just a wonderful easy guide and I highly recommend it to any women with PCOS.

With three new books out about PCOS I eagerly looked forward to this book. What good info!Easy to read!Maybe too easy? The information found could be found in intro articles about the condition.the other two new books out at the latter end of 2000 are much more information for the "in need of info patient" If you know very little this book is a great start,if you have the basics down look elsewhere.
