Pregnancy and Parenting after Thirty-Five: Mid Life, New Life (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book) Review

I found this book while waiting for my second child at age 39. 8 years since the last so a lot has been forgotten and a lot has changed. It's a mine of useful information especially the whole issue of what tests to have/not have for the possibility of abnormality. I really liked that the writers understand that not all pregnancies end happily ever after. The fact that they both went through this themselves really shows through.Silvia S.

Product Description:

More and more women are having babies after the age of thirty-five and experiencing the joy of motherhood. But mothers-to-be in this age group sometimes face unique medical, emotional, and social challenges. Conception may be difficult and the risk of miscarriage during early pregnancy is higher, as is the potential for complications such as hypertension and diabetes. And having a child later in life can also be surprisingly disruptive to well-established domestic routines and carefully cultivated careers. Michele Moore and Caroline de Costa -- two physicians who have been down this road themselves -- offer reliable medical expertise and personal reassurance to women tackling these challenges. Pregnancy and Parenting after Thirty-Five covers a broad range of issues for mothers in mid life, from the possibility of Cesarean section to the awkwardness of being the oldest mom at PTA meetings to the joy of holding your infant in your arms. Incorporating the stories of real women who have gone through mid-life pregnancy, Moore and de Costa have created a valuable resource that will help other women do so realistically and with confidence. One of the few books devoted to prospective mothers over thirty-five, this one also includes information on surrogacy, adoption, and the first few months of being a new mother.

The Essential Over 35 Pregnancy Guide Review

The Essential Over 35 Pregnancy Guide

After reading Natalie Angiers' book, "Woman: An IntimateGeography", this book left something to be desired. As a primer forwomen who are over 35 and either want to be or are pregnant, it was notbad, however, for a woman who is over 35 and wants to be pregnant and hasread a good deal about her body and her possibilities, this book was sortof more the Reader's Digest variety. This book might well serve as aresource for all the different tests an older mother can have to ensurefetal health. It also however, stressed a little too much on all thevarious reasons that older women have a higher risk ofconceiving/delivering unhealthy babies. Once I had finished it I had ahard time convincing myself that it was 'going to be ok' to conceive at 37and deliver a health child to term - not the sort of feeling one wants at37 before her first child. In any case, the key to understanding the pointof reference for this book was the fact that the author was a doctor (henceall those tests) and had had her first child at 41.

This is the one book I turned to again & again during my pregnancy, particularly during the latter half of the pregnancy. There is a chapter for each week of pregnancy, and over the course of forty weeks, the book covers all the topics.I especially enjoyed the sketches of a pregnant woman's body at different stages of the pregnancy, showing the size & position of the uterus and the fetus, and the commentaries about the size of the baby at different times pregnancy (most of which relate to food -- your baby is now the size of a pea, a grapefruit, a banana, a loaf of zucchini bread, etc.)The book also features plenty of photographs of pregnant women of all shapes & sizes, and you get a sense that Dr. Shananan really admires their beauty and their "pregnancy glow."I thought that the book celebrated pregnancy -- one of the other reviewers found that the book was too scary, talking about all of the risks of pregnancy, but I found it to be much less so than many of the other books on the market.Dr. Shanahan discusses risks realistically (she had three miscarriages before her daughter was born), but she doesn't dwell on them.
Dr. Shanahan is very candid in her discussions of her own pregnancy -- like a friend telling you about her own choices, what she would have done differently, and discussing those areas in which she didn't really follow her own advice. For example, she discusses her teenage bout with eating disorders that led her to gain less weight than she should have during pregnancy, and the small (but perfectly healthy) baby that resulted. There is a picture of her in the delivery room with her baby five minutes after birth, looking like she doesn't have a clue about what to do next. She shares her journal entries to the baby, written while pregnant, about how she's not going to feed her baby fast food or stick her in front of the TV.Obviously, she knows her stuff -- but she's also a real person and her willingness to show that makes the book all the more enjoyable.

Where has this book been? This book has everything you always wanted to know about DI but had no one to ask.Helping the Stork is truly a support group in a book. This book is as technical as necessary but it deals with the feelings involved in the DI process. This is a very warm book and easy to read.No matter what feelings you are having you will find them in this book. The authors recognize that DI is a physical and emotional journey toward parenthood. Why should you own this book?Because although this is the only DI book published in the 1990s, it is also an excellent book. These authors acknowledge that DI is not just for married couples. There is a section on Becoming a Mom Without a Dad, Becoming a Single Mom Through DI, Lesbian Couples Creating Families through DI, and a section on Celebrating Differences.Other sections I think are wonderful include: Putting Together Your Medical Team, Emotional Needs At That First Insemination, Two Methods of Insemination, When DI Memories Come to Mind, and Selecting on a Donor's Personal Statements. My favorite chapter was chapter 10 - Humor in Hindsight. The book quotes dialogue from Wendy Levy's zany film SWIM, SWIM...TALKING TO SPERM AND OTHER DESPERATE ACTS."I start to take Clomiphene, a relatively mild fertility drug, and thankfully, I experience no side effects, except maybe locking my girlfriend in the closet once a week if she forgets to vacuum her hair off the bathroom floor.Okay, a few mood swings..." And, if you enjoy reading, which I am sure you do if you are an Amazon fan, this book is worth the price just for the bibliography included in the end of the book.

Product Description:
Helping the Stork The sourcebook for all the information parents-to-be need to know about the choices and challenges of donor insemination Each year donor insemination (DI) offers a pathway to parenthood for the hundreds of thousands who turn to family-building alternatives. Although DI is considered as often as adoption, couples facing male infertility, as well as single women and lesbian couples, have had few places to turn for information about this method, which has been shrouded in secrecy. In Helping the Stork, parents-to-be, as well as friends and family, doctors, and counselors, can explore the choices and challenges raised by this alternative to overcoming childlessness. This comprehensive handbook moves through each step of the process: reaching a solid decision about whether donor insemination is the best choice for a family's future; handling the difficult issue of privacy; selecting a donor and getting started; and learning to thrive as a family meeting DI's added challenges. Full of wisdom from medical and mental health experts, Helping the Stork is also enriched with stories from many families who share their insights and experiences. This book is a reassuring, supportive, and helpful guide that no one considering or going through the process of donor insemination should be without.
