A one-stop goldmine for new parents! After an extensive survey ofpregnancy resources, I was very pleased with the most recent edition ofPlanning Your Pregnancy & Birth. Coming from one of the nation's topauthoritaties on OB/GYN care(ACOG), this handbook is ideal for expectantparents, students, healthcare professionals, or anyone wanting to getsolid, current pregnancy details. Easy-to-read, comprehensive - with info.ranging from preconception to postpartum to pregnancy loss - and chockedfull of clear illustrations and graphs, this resource contains loads ofhelpful tips in every section (including checklists) and includes a sectionon new father issues. Terms with easy-to-understand definitions, morecharts, and a fill-in section for you to keep track of your pregnancy, areall included in the back of this book. I also found the smaller size andpaperback version (fits easily in most purses & briefcases) to be ahandy alternative to many of the larger, bulkier options on the markettoday. Get this book and you won't need any others!

How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby Review

How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first 100 pages of this book deal with how good this method is and how wonderful Dr. Shettles is.That may be true, but not very useful. The key aspect of sex selection is the timing of intercourse around ovulation. This and all other aspects of fertility are explained in much clearer andgreater detail in the wonderful book Taking Charge of Your Fertility byToni Weschler. She provides LOTS of charts and examples and photos to helpyou track your cycle compared to just three sample charts in Dr. Shettlesbook. She also summarizes the techniques for sex selection in a separatechapter, and it makes a lot more sense after her detailed explanation ofoverall cycle tracking. If you're really focused on sex selection, you maygain some extra from Dr. Shettles book (like who should and shouldn't drinkcoffee), but it should be read in combination with Toni Weschler's book, which will answer any practical questions you have left.

What to Expect Before You're Expecting Review

What to Expect Before You're Expecting
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE YOU'RE EXPECTING is just like the other books in the expecting "series:" Jam packed with information in a good format. There are sections for both the "Mother to Be" and the "Father to Be," but neither are exclusive and should be read by both parties; in fact, there is more for men in this book than What to Expect When You're Expecting: 4th Edition. You probably already know what to expect given the monumental success of the previous Expecting books, and this book is no exception. Sections of the book include: Nutrition, Basic Anatomy, Ovulation, Timing of Intimacy, Miscarriage and Infertility, Medications, and tons of other little questions.

This book is excellent, but the next few comments should not be taken as criticisms but rather just information.

The difference with this installment is that there is more humor woven into the text than the previous books, which helps lighten the load; however, the humor at points is too much of a good thing, and the writing can seem juvenile and uses a lot of immature phrases (i.e. Aunt Flo), which I feel undermines the writing slightly.

One other thing is the book takes some of the magic away, providing step by step instructions, hundreds of pages of what to do better. I can totally appreciate how this book may help people who have struggled with conception, and I feel this book will be revered in that case. However, for everyone else be prepared to have the magic of conception possibly ruined as baby making becomes a job, you are forced to follow a specific calendar, and monitoring your diet. I know that at least a handful of people have successfully conceived and delivered healthy babies prior to this book being published, but this book could be the saving grace for any couple that is struggling to conceive. It reminds me of the movie Knocked Up when the characters are discussing how in the world people had babies before baby books were published.

Overall, WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE YOU ARE EXPECTING is a great resource, and should be read in smaller doses because it is so information and fact heavy; however, the humor (which at some points is rather juvenile) effectively lightens the load.

Good reading,

J.Stoner

The Essential Over 35 Pregnancy Guide Review

The Essential Over 35 Pregnancy Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After reading Natalie Angiers' book, "Woman: An IntimateGeography", this book left something to be desired. As a primer forwomen who are over 35 and either want to be or are pregnant, it was notbad, however, for a woman who is over 35 and wants to be pregnant and hasread a good deal about her body and her possibilities, this book was sortof more the Reader's Digest variety. This book might well serve as aresource for all the different tests an older mother can have to ensurefetal health. It also however, stressed a little too much on all thevarious reasons that older women have a higher risk ofconceiving/delivering unhealthy babies. Once I had finished it I had ahard time convincing myself that it was 'going to be ok' to conceive at 37and deliver a health child to term - not the sort of feeling one wants at37 before her first child. In any case, the key to understanding the pointof reference for this book was the fact that the author was a doctor (henceall those tests) and had had her first child at 41.

The Unofficial Guide to Having a Baby Review

The Unofficial Guide to Having a Baby
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book when we decided we wanted a baby.I really wanted to get The Mother of All Baby Books, but my store didn't have it.Turns out, Ann Douglas wrote both books, so it didn't matter.
I found the preconception advice wonderful. It also gives you an overview of what to expect when you're actually pregnant, and breaks it down week by week. There are several helpful charts in the book, such as one that goes over the most common prescription and non-prescription drugs and the effects they have on the baby. There's also information on fertility testing when things don't go as planned.
However, now that I'm 7 months pregnant first time mom-to-be, I find I don't use the book very often. The week-to-week information is great when you want to know what to expect before you get pregnant/just get pregnant, but it's not sufficient information to keep you really informed when you're actually at those critical points.I find that the book is lacking in details on those conditions that can pop up during pregnancy, such as increased heart rate, shortness of breath, etc. These are normal events, but I just wanted more information on what to expect and when to expect these kinds of conditions.
Overall, it's still a great book.I definitely recommend it to those who are trying. However, if you're already pregnant, I recommend Your Pregnancy Week By Week. This has been my favorite book so far.

What a well-written book!Reading Toni Weschler's "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" before I read this book helped in understanding the signs of fertility andproper charting of these signs.
In response to the reviewer who was upset that Dr Shettles advises going off the pill 6 months prior...her doctor is right, a woman may ovulate as early as one month after discontinuing the pill; this would allow her to successfully acheive pregnancy as early as her first cycle after coming off the pill. What it is VITAL for the reader to understand (by reading the preceding chapters and not just skipping ahead), is that Dr Shettles recommends waiting at least six months SO THAT A WOMAN'S CYCLE RETURNS TO A NORMAL, SOMEWHAT PREDICTABLE STATE.Only then, can she and her partner hope to practice natural sex pre-selection.Most of our physicians are only concerned with helping us to acheive pregnancy, be it of a boy or girl; any practicer of Dr Shettles' method should be thrilled to have either one...but if you'd like to swing the odds one way or the other READ THIS BOOK!!!
