Coming from one of the nation's topauthoritaties on OB/GYN care(ACOG), this handbook is ideal for expectantparents, students, healthcare professionals, or anyone wanting to getsolid, current pregnancy details. Easy-to-read, comprehensive - with info.ranging from preconception to postpartum to pregnancy loss - and chockedfull of clear illustrations and graphs, this resource contains loads ofhelpful tips in every section (including checklists) and includes a sectionon new father issues. Terms with easy-to-understand definitions, morecharts, and a fill-in section for you to keep track of your pregnancy, areall included in the back of this book. I also found the smaller size andpaperback version (fits easily in most purses & briefcases) to be ahandy alternative to many of the larger, bulkier options on the markettoday. This book will help so many couples on a difficult road and hopefully open our society's eyes to the need to remove all stigma still surrounding infertility. We are a culture that celebrates beauty and fame so we desperately need those that seem to "have it all" to share their experiences.
I am so grateful to this author for this wonderful book!

Having struggled through numerousturgid anthropological works by the likes of Levi-Strauss, Roheim, etc., itwas thrilling to read such an ambitious clear-sighted and compellingaccount of the origins of human culture, together with an excellentcritique of much current anthropological thinking.
It's worth mentioningthat Chris Knight is a marxist, and by that I don't mean vaguely left-wingin the manner of, say, Eric Hobsbawm. He's a real believer...dialecticmaterialism, the whole works. Clearly Knight believes his marxism isessential to his thesis. I would argue that although this maybe enabled himto see through other anthropological schools - structuralism,functionalism, what-have-you - and to develop his own theories, in the endit's irrelevant to his conclusions. So, wade through the marxist stuff, youcan ignore it, it's not to my mind necessary to agree with his ideologicalbeliefs (I don't) to appreciate his arguments, and to agree with much ofwhat he says - or at least to find this a wonderfully stimulating book.

(More customer reviews)Lennart Nilsson's amazing photography of life in the womb is gathered together into this book to help anyone understand the miracle of life. Unlike other books about pregnancy, this book deals with the child's development rather than the mother's, and as such can be appreciated by all.
If you are pregnant, know someone who is, or just want to know about babies in the womb, I highly recommend at least leafing thru the book in your local bookstore... you'll most likely buy it as soon as you see it, so be prepared! This is also an excellent gift for anyone who is pregnant!
We used this book to educate all our friends about pregnancy and later to show my 18 month old son what those twin babies in mommy's belly were looking like. My parents used an earlier version of this book to help my sister and I prepare for the birth of our baby brother.
Full color photographs of inutero babies fill the pages, going from preconception chapters on reproduction, through each week of life, all the way to the birth of the baby. Week by week, you can look at what a babies' development should be, learn when the ears and arms develop (as well as many other parts), etc.
The photography is amazing, crisper and clearer that the naked eye looking at a baby out of the womb. The beauty is something akin to the brilliant images that the Hubble Space Telescope has shot back to Earth. The discoveries that you will make seem endless (Did you know that at 4 1/2 weeks we all look like some prehistoric tentacle bearing sea creature?).
There is also a video out called "The Miracle of Life" that has Lennart Nilsson's videos of inutero babies that is an incredible learning tool as well. Most good libraries should have it.
Oh, the only real downfalls are that the photos of people outside the womb have that cheesy 70s/80s look to them, no twins inutero, and you will probably wear out the binding on your book because it is so spectacular.

(More customer reviews)The first 100 pages of this book deal with how good this method is and how wonderful Dr. Shettles is.That may be true, but not very useful.The key aspect of sex selection is the timing of intercourse around ovulation. This and all other aspects of fertility are explained in much clearer andgreater detail in the wonderful book Taking Charge of Your Fertility byToni Weschler.She provides LOTS of charts and examples and photos to helpyou track your cycle compared to just three sample charts in Dr. Shettlesbook.She also summarizes the techniques for sex selection in a separatechapter, and it makes a lot more sense after her detailed explanation ofoverall cycle tracking.If you're really focused on sex selection, you maygain some extra from Dr. Shettles book (like who should and shouldn't drinkcoffee), but it should be read in combination with Toni Weschler's book,which will answer any practical questions you have left.

I had a few issues with the biased information she gave, which was not accurate when compared to what the AAP really recommends. (More customer reviews)WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE YOU'RE EXPECTING is just like the other books in the expecting "series:" Jam packed with information in a good format. There are sections for both the "Mother to Be" and the "Father to Be," but neither are exclusive and should be read by both parties; in fact, there is more for men in this book than What to Expect When You're Expecting: 4th Edition. You probably already know what to expect given the monumental success of the previous Expecting books, and this book is no exception. Sections of the book include: Nutrition, Basic Anatomy, Ovulation, Timing of Intimacy, Miscarriage and Infertility, Medications, and tons of other little questions.

This book is excellent, but the next few comments should not be taken as criticisms but rather just information.

The difference with this installment is that there is more humor woven into the text than the previous books, which helps lighten the load; however, the humor at points is too much of a good thing, and the writing can seem juvenile and uses a lot of immature phrases (i.e. Aunt Flo), which I feel undermines the writing slightly.

One other thing is the book takes some of the magic away, providing step by step instructions, hundreds of pages of what to do better. I can totally appreciate how this book may help people who have struggled with conception, and I feel this book will be revered in that case. However, for everyone else be prepared to have the magic of conception possibly ruined as baby making becomes a job, you are forced to follow a specific calendar, and monitoring your diet. I know that at least a handful of people have successfully conceived and delivered healthy babies prior to this book being published, but this book could be the saving grace for any couple that is struggling to conceive. It reminds me of the movie Knocked Up when the characters are discussing how in the world people had babies before baby books were published.

Overall, WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE YOU ARE EXPECTING is a great resource, and should be read in smaller doses because it is so information and fact heavy; however, the humor (which at some points is rather juvenile) effectively lightens the load.
