The Christian Woman's Guide to Sexuality Review

I enjoyed reading this book, particularly because it validated me as a Christian woman and validated my sexuality in a healthy, spiritual way.
The book was informative from a "sex ed" point of view, as well as from a Biblical point of view.I especially appreciated the discussion on birth control and the emphasis on the fact that children and fertility are gifts from God.

Blood Relations: Menstruation and the Origins of Culture Review

Blood Relations: Menstruation and the Origins of Culture
Average Reviews:

This book was a revelation for me. Having struggled through numerousturgid anthropological works by the likes of Levi-Strauss, Roheim, etc., itwas thrilling to read such an ambitious clear-sighted and compellingaccount of the origins of human culture, together with an excellentcritique of much current anthropological thinking.
It's worth mentioningthat Chris Knight is a marxist, and by that I don't mean vaguely left-wingin the manner of, say, Eric Hobsbawm. He's a real believer...dialecticmaterialism, the whole works. Clearly Knight believes his marxism isessential to his thesis. I would argue that although this maybe enabled himto see through other anthropological schools - structuralism, functionalism, what-have-you - and to develop his own theories, in the endit's irrelevant to his conclusions. So, wade through the marxist stuff, youcan ignore it, it's not to my mind necessary to agree with his ideologicalbeliefs (I don't) to appreciate his arguments, and to agree with much ofwhat he says - or at least to find this a wonderfully stimulating book.

Product Description:
This original and ingenious book presents a new theory of the origins of human culture. Integrating perspectives of evolutionary biology and social anthropology within a Marxist framework, Chris Knight rejects the common assumption that human culture was a modified extension of primate behavior and argues instead that it was the product of an immense social, sexual, and political revolution initiated by women.

Bipolar and Pregnant: How to Manage and Succeed in Planning and Parenting While Living with Manic Depression Review

Bipolar and Pregnant: How to Manage and Succeed in Planning and Parenting While Living with Manic Depression

As a medical doctor, this is what I would call a dangerous book. It assumes people with bipolar disorder will stop their medications, a potentially disasterous decision for mom and baby. It does not address how to safely stay on medications during pregnancy. I'm disturbed by this and will steer my patients clear. It is a pity because if well done it would fill a void on the topic.

Sex Differences in the Brain: From Genes to Behavior Review

Sex Differences in the Brain: From Genes to Behavior
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When it comes to studying the nature and origin of differences between men and women, one quickly encounters an aggressive cacophony of politics. Often, the scientists themselves are the most egregious perpetrators of this confusion, selectively coloring and distorting findings to suit their personal agendas.

The fact is, there is an overwhelming amount of science addressing sex differences. And no single book does a better job of communicating the bulk of this science in a neutral fashion than Sex Differences in the Brain. As SDintB asserts early on, accurate knowledge of sexual dimorphisms in the brain isn't just a political or philosophical issue, but a health issue: men and women suffering from multifarious sources of neural and psychiatric debilitation may require different treatment depending on their gender. This is a point often overlooked in the rush to insist that men and women are fundamentally the same in the brain.

Make no mistake: this is an academic book, aimed at scholars. It's dense with invaluable references, with chapters authored by a variety of scientists from a respectably wide diversity of disciplines. It covers almost every major area of sex differences: genetic, behavioral neuroendocrinology, neurocognition, neuroplasticity, neurophysiology, psychiatry, pharmacogenetics, stress response. The chapters are quite thorough, and generally review the available research in a neutral fashion.

There's probably no better place to start an inquiry into what truly makes men and women different than Sex Differences in the Brain.

Product Description:
Sex is a fundamentally important biological variable. Recent years have seen significant progress in the integration of sex in many aspects of basic and clinical research, including analyses of sex differences in brain function. Significant advances in the technology available for studying the endocrine and nervous systems are now coupled with a more sophisticated awareness of the interconnections of these two communication systems of the body. A thorough understanding of the current knowledge, conceptual approaches, methodological capabilities, and challenges is a prerequisite to continued progress in research and therapeutics in this interdisciplinary area.
Sex Differences in the Brain provides scientists with the basic tools for investigating sex differences in brain and behavior and insight into areas where important progress in understanding physiologically relevant sex differences has already been made. This book was edited and co-authored by members of the Isis Fund Network on Sex, Gender, Drugs and the Brain, sponsored by the Society for Womens Health Research.

The book is arranged in three parts. The first part of the book introduces the study of sex differences in the brain, with an overview of how the brain, stress systems, and pharmacogenetics differ in males and females and how this information is important for the study of behavior and neurobiology of both genders. The second part presents examples of sex differences in neurobiology and behavior from both basic and clinical research perspectives, covering both humans and nonhuman animals. The final part discusses sex differences in the neurobiology of disease and neurological disorders.
For interested individuals as well as those who are considering conducting research at the intersections of endocrinology, neuroscience, and other areas of biomedicine, the study of sex differences offers exciting and challenging questions and perspectives. This book is intended as a guide and resource for clinicians, scientists, and students.

The Woman's Yoga Book: Asana and Pranayama for All Phases of the Menstrual Cycle Review

The Woman's Yoga Book: Asana and Pranayama for All Phases of the Menstrual Cycle
Average Reviews:

The Woman's Yoga Book: Asana and Pranayama for All Phases of the Menstrual Cycle is a book that every woman will want to own. With detailed illustrations, excellent guidelines and practices for any type of reproductive issue, author Bobby Clennell has written THE book that works directly with your cycle.Clennell is a senior Iyengar instructor who has studied directly with the Iyengars, most notably, Geeta Iyengar, who writes the forward to this book.Iyengar has written her own book for women, Yoga - A Gem For Women, and although that is a very useful book, I have found Clennell's book to be more user friendly.

There is an intro with discussion on how menstruation has been viewed over the years by each culture as well as the physical dynamics. The illustrations are really nice - there are variations of poses and in some cases, she shows how to come in and out of each pose.Every picture is clear and easy to understand.Instructions are concise - Clennell makes even the most complicated poses simple to comprehend.Any possible discomfort that you may have during your cycle is covered along with a suggested routine. There are practices for mood swings, breast tenderness, fatigue, migraines and more. And best of all, these routines do work!

Sadly, there is not a lot of information on perimenopause or menopause - but I guess since this is a book about menstruation, I shouldn't expect it.Perhaps Clennell could address these issues in a future book? After using The Woman's Yoga Book with great success, one can only hope!

Everyone else raves but I really really didn't like this book. Here are my reasons:
-he rejects all herbal remedies because they have not been FDA approved.I admit there are problems with quality control and no you shouldn't ask the check out clerk for advice on natural remedies but there are other educated practitioners, even doctors, who can give advice on natural remedies.
-he is too quick to recommend a hysterectomy. While he says that you shouldn't have a D & C to try to identify excessive bleeding if you're going to have any surgery you might as well have a hysterectomy, forget myomectomy or any other less invasive surgery.I'm quite happy that I got rid of my fibroids with a myomectomy and still have my uterus - thank goodness my doctor didn't agree with this book.
-the book is 4 years old now and doesn't take into consideration the recent studies which show that HRT may not be the right way to go.I'd like to know how those studies affect his recommendation that all perimenopausal women take low dose birth control pills
-he seems to have only one answer for perimenopause and that's low dose birth control pills.I'm always suspicious of complicated problems that have only one answer.

I'm still looking for a book that I feel comfortable with.
