Product Description:
Preconception Plain & Simple - A Deliciously Smart and Sexy Guide in Preparing for Pregnancy came to be born from my (Audrey's) journey to have a baby!I wanted to nourish my body, mind, and soul with the proper steps to prepare myself, and my husband, to conceive a healthy child.I had seen too many women turn this wonderful time into a mechanical routine filled with stress and anxiety...I wanted to avoid that.I wanted to immerse myself in the magic and wonder of this time...to relax and have fun while letting nature take its course.
I asked my mother to share with me a few tidbits from her "time" - the mid-1970's - but the quarter-century that had elapsed had brought so much more information and technology that she was as comically "clueless" as I was!So we embarked upon an unexpected journey, searching bookstores, libraries, and websites... looking for information on everything one needs to know about preconception.
We began to discover ways to promote fertility beyond the medical information, and I began to incorporate them into every aspect of my life; from fertility enhancing foods, flowers, aromas, gemstones and amulets, to spells and rituals used by different cultures to promote fertility.Sure, I still followed the medical advice, but I surrounded myself with the knowledge of the ages to create a nurturing environment, which allowed me to relax, have fun, and let the magic happen!
We wanted to share what we had learned with women everywhere by creating a guide for inviting fertility into their lives, and thus Preconception Plain & Simple was born - a one-stop resource for everything a woman needs to know about preconception.
Preconception Plain & Simple - A Deliciously Smart and Sexy Guide in Preparing for Pregnancy brings to women, men, and couples passion, romance, and fun... a thorough medical review and assessment of both hopeful Mom and Dad... and marvelous fertility wisdom to a topic that is all-too-often consumed with infertility statistics, clinical discussions, and fears of infertility. Preconception Plain & Simple offers and celebrates a perfect combination of the medical, the miracle, and the magic of baby making without the fears... but certainly including the fun and"relaxing" part of it all!
Happy baby making!

Before You Conceive: The Complete Pregnancy Guide Review

Before You Conceive: The Complete Pregnancy Guide

This was the first book I bought about prepregnancy.Sussman was highly recommended and I bought this book first.I read each and every page.I am not yet pregnant, this is my first child, and I am not 30 yet -- but I appreciated the parts on high-risk pregnancies.I like to know what may happen just to prepare myself. My husband and I both feel that we are prepared for anything from a "perfect textbook" pregnancy and delivery to complete bedrest and quitting work -- and this book helped us talk about ideas and situations presented in the book.
I especially enjoyed the sections on over the counter and prescription medications, workplace toxins, and why some (everyday) things are not good for your baby.
I agree that some of the content is outdated -- however there are still many good parts!
My favorite part overall is the section with the check lists.I am very organized and keep detailed lists of things to do/ask about/learn more about/read, etc.I would suggest this book to anyone who is planning to become pregnant.I DON'T suggest ANY ONE BOOK exclusively.I believe that you will need several books to get the best picture of what is happening to and in your body.I suggest "What to Expect...", "Unofficial Guide..." and (my personal favorite right now) "Pregnancy Journal...".

Without anybody or anything to guide me I came across this book and went to see it in person before I bought it.Not only did the colorful pictures illustrate ideas and concepts nicely, but the layout of the book makes this an easy read.I couldn't put it down!I found myself amazed at all the things I learned about the female body.Oh, I can't forget the male body too, that's just as important. One side note, the book talks about possible complications during pregnancy and since I already have high blood pressure, I started to get a little anxiety reading the part about pre eclampsia, a condition you can have during pregnancy (high blood pressure). So when you read this part, just take it with a grain of salt.Otherwise, the book is great and gives you much knowledge on how to conceive, the best time, how to chart it out, etc. This book went beyond my expectations.I'm glad I read it now since I can take some of the advice and become healthy now for our unborn child.I would recommend it to anybody thinking about trying to have a baby.

The Pre-Pregnancy Planner Review

This book was awful.Josleen's "professional" point of view regarding pregnancy entails babie's as being a huge inconvenience, financial drain, and resentment to your "hard-earned relationship".I felt terrible while reading this book.Fortunately, newer books and philosophies exist since she published this useless trash in 1986.I burned it because I shudder at the idea of someone else picking it up a second-hand store.

What to Expect Before You're Expecting Review

What to Expect Before You're Expecting
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE YOU'RE EXPECTING is just like the other books in the expecting "series:" Jam packed with information in a good format. There are sections for both the "Mother to Be" and the "Father to Be," but neither are exclusive and should be read by both parties; in fact, there is more for men in this book than What to Expect When You're Expecting: 4th Edition. You probably already know what to expect given the monumental success of the previous Expecting books, and this book is no exception. Sections of the book include: Nutrition, Basic Anatomy, Ovulation, Timing of Intimacy, Miscarriage and Infertility, Medications, and tons of other little questions.

This book is excellent, but the next few comments should not be taken as criticisms but rather just information.

The difference with this installment is that there is more humor woven into the text than the previous books, which helps lighten the load; however, the humor at points is too much of a good thing, and the writing can seem juvenile and uses a lot of immature phrases (i.e. Aunt Flo), which I feel undermines the writing slightly.

One other thing is the book takes some of the magic away, providing step by step instructions, hundreds of pages of what to do better. I can totally appreciate how this book may help people who have struggled with conception, and I feel this book will be revered in that case. However, for everyone else be prepared to have the magic of conception possibly ruined as baby making becomes a job, you are forced to follow a specific calendar, and monitoring your diet. I know that at least a handful of people have successfully conceived and delivered healthy babies prior to this book being published, but this book could be the saving grace for any couple that is struggling to conceive. It reminds me of the movie Knocked Up when the characters are discussing how in the world people had babies before baby books were published.

Overall, WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE YOU ARE EXPECTING is a great resource, and should be read in smaller doses because it is so information and fact heavy; however, the humor (which at some points is rather juvenile) effectively lightens the load.

Good reading,

J.Stoner

The Unofficial Guide to Having a Baby Review

The Unofficial Guide to Having a Baby
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book when we decided we wanted a baby.I really wanted to get The Mother of All Baby Books, but my store didn't have it.Turns out, Ann Douglas wrote both books, so it didn't matter.
I found the preconception advice wonderful. It also gives you an overview of what to expect when you're actually pregnant, and breaks it down week by week. There are several helpful charts in the book, such as one that goes over the most common prescription and non-prescription drugs and the effects they have on the baby. There's also information on fertility testing when things don't go as planned.
However, now that I'm 7 months pregnant first time mom-to-be, I find I don't use the book very often. The week-to-week information is great when you want to know what to expect before you get pregnant/just get pregnant, but it's not sufficient information to keep you really informed when you're actually at those critical points.I find that the book is lacking in details on those conditions that can pop up during pregnancy, such as increased heart rate, shortness of breath, etc. These are normal events, but I just wanted more information on what to expect and when to expect these kinds of conditions.
Overall, it's still a great book.I definitely recommend it to those who are trying. However, if you're already pregnant, I recommend Your Pregnancy Week By Week. This has been my favorite book so far.
