Product Description:
Preconception Plain & Simple - A Deliciously Smart and Sexy Guide in Preparing for Pregnancy came to be born from my (Audrey's) journey to have a baby!I wanted to nourish my body, mind, and soul with the proper steps to prepare myself, and my husband, to conceive a healthy child.I had seen too many women turn this wonderful time into a mechanical routine filled with stress and anxiety...I wanted to avoid that.I wanted to immerse myself in the magic and wonder of this time...to relax and have fun while letting nature take its course.
I asked my mother to share with me a few tidbits from her "time" - the mid-1970's - but the quarter-century that had elapsed had brought so much more information and technology that she was as comically "clueless" as I was!So we embarked upon an unexpected journey, searching bookstores, libraries, and websites... looking for information on everything one needs to know about preconception.
We began to discover ways to promote fertility beyond the medical information, and I began to incorporate them into every aspect of my life; from fertility enhancing foods, flowers, aromas, gemstones and amulets, to spells and rituals used by different cultures to promote fertility.Sure, I still followed the medical advice, but I surrounded myself with the knowledge of the ages to create a nurturing environment, which allowed me to relax, have fun, and let the magic happen!
We wanted to share what we had learned with women everywhere by creating a guide for inviting fertility into their lives, and thus Preconception Plain & Simple was born - a one-stop resource for everything a woman needs to know about preconception.
Preconception Plain & Simple - A Deliciously Smart and Sexy Guide in Preparing for Pregnancy brings to women, men, and couples passion, romance, and fun... a thorough medical review and assessment of both hopeful Mom and Dad... and marvelous fertility wisdom to a topic that is all-too-often consumed with infertility statistics, clinical discussions, and fears of infertility. Preconception Plain & Simple offers and celebrates a perfect combination of the medical, the miracle, and the magic of baby making without the fears... but certainly including the fun and"relaxing" part of it all!
Happy baby making!

Without anybody or anything to guide me I came across this book and went to see it in person before I bought it.Not only did the colorful pictures illustrate ideas and concepts nicely, but the layout of the book makes this an easy read.I couldn't put it down!I found myself amazed at all the things I learned about the female body.Oh, I can't forget the male body too, that's just as important. One side note, the book talks about possible complications during pregnancy and since I already have high blood pressure, I started to get a little anxiety reading the part about pre eclampsia, a condition you can have during pregnancy (high blood pressure). So when you read this part, just take it with a grain of salt.Otherwise, the book is great and gives you much knowledge on how to conceive, the best time, how to chart it out, etc. This book went beyond my expectations.I'm glad I read it now since I can take some of the advice and become healthy now for our unborn child.I would recommend it to anybody thinking about trying to have a baby.

Coming to Term: Uncovering the Truth About Miscarriage Review

Coming to Term: Uncovering the Truth About Miscarriage
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is by far the best book available on miscarriage. I found it invaluable for these reasons:

1) It provides detailed information about why/how miscarriage occurs which I have never read elsewhere despite (unfortunately) countless hours spent researching the subject. Cohen (who is a science writer) interviewed experts in genetics and recurrent miscarriage and scoured files and viewed slides collected in miscarriage studies. This book presents far more information than a typical book on pregnancy loss provides, and Cohen does a commendable job of making some really complex biology accessible to the average reader.

2) The book explains why there is so much controversy surrounding miscarriage treatments. In short, to prove a treatment really works, doctors need to design a trial that shows the treatment is more effective than doing nothing at all. But women miscarry for many different reasons and a treatment that might help a woman who miscarries due to hormonal problems obviously won't help one who has a structural problem with her uterus, for example. One scientist quoted says miscarriage is a "malfunction," not a sickness, so a study of miscarriage treatments is more difficult to design than a study of say, diabetes treatments, where patients are much more alike. There's also, Cohen says, little financial incentive for the pharmaceutical companies to do them, but that's another issue. The result is VERY FEW treatments are actually proven to work--they might or they might not, nobody has much data to show.

3) The book explains why doctors are so apt to tell you "just try again." This is the good news promised on the cover: Even women who have had 4 miscarriages in a row are likely to carry a baby to term with NO intervention whatsoever. The book includes anecdotes of women, including Cohen's wife, who miscarry again and again and then have a healthy baby, both with and without medical intervention, along with the science to explain how and why this can happen.

4) Cohen debunks the link between most environmental factors and miscarriage and raises serious questions about certain immunological treatments (if not the goodwill) of famous miscarriage doctor Alan Beer.

What I found a little frustrating about this book is that Cohen adopts--somewhat--the "it's best to do nothing" attitude shared by many MDs. Apparently there is science to support this up to 4 miscarriages but for those of us in the 5+ group, what's the answer?

However, it's not Cohen's fault that they're aren't lots of proven treatments, and his reservations stem from genuine concern for women's health (the DES chapter is a cautionary tale on the dangers of overconfidence).

Cohen approaches the topic with a sensitivity born of personal experience and the professionalism you would expect from a science writer. The book will help you become a more informed patient and give you hope grounded in fact.

Avoiding Miscarriage: Everything You Need To Know To Feel More Confident In Pregnancy Review

I was impressed with this very readable book which combines up-to-the-minute science with true case histories to explain the causes of miscarriage. It is written in a question and answer format and allows a woman to measure her individual risk of miscarriage and to take preventitive steps to avoid it.The author had multiple miscarriages herself, and she is able to pass her understanding on to her reader. After researching the causes of miscarriage, and having two healthy children, she wrote this book.I recommend it to every woman to explain how our bodies work.

The Essential Guide to Lesbian Conception, Pregnancy, and Birth Review

The Essential Guide to Lesbian Conception, Pregnancy, and Birth
Average Reviews:

I like to eat brown rice and tofu, I am comfortable with alternative family structures including families with more than 2 parents, I live in the Bay Area, I plan on having a home birth, I drink herbal tea, I occasionally I even do yoga. Yes, it's true, I'm almost a hippie.

Yet this book was way too touchy-feely and anti-western medicine even for ME!

For better or worse, this is THE MOST INFORMATIVE BOOK on donor insemination and queer womens' pregnancy issues that is available. It is full of information from the perspective of experienced midwives who have multiple children - A source far more trustworthy than the author of "The Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians" (a recent first-time mom).

I personally believe home births are far safer for most low-risk pregnancies than hospital births. And I think lesbian conception is over-medicalized by a very male-centered Western medical system. However, I part ways with the authors there. Because unfortunately, as another reviewer says, they "throw the baby out with the bathwater." They have this supposedly "non-judgmental" attitude yet their opinions come across VERY strongly in this book. Those opinions include unmedicated home birth, "natural" conception and midwife-led pre-natal care being better than other options. This may inspire some women to consider this approach - But it may also alienate many women who need this book.

My greatest wishes are that this book covered some issues specific to people of color, talked more explicitly about parenting roles in butch/femme relationships, discussed disabled and chronically ill womens' pregnancy experiences, and more specifically addressed issues of sexual abuse survivors and pregnancy. These are major omissions, in my view. The book is definitely geared towards middle class moms with very

I appreciated the books' inclusion of bisexual women and the few mentions of pregnancy issues for butch women. I also think their approach towards conception is much smarter and more well-informed than that of many "fertility specialists" and OB-GYN's as well as conventional wisdom.

This book left me feeling totally alarmed and paranoid about the many things that could go wrong with my pregnancy or keep me from getting pregnant in the first place (Oh my God! We use chlorine bleach when we wash our clothes! I'm going to have a miscarriage!)But I will be using much of the information to help conceive my first child.

Read this book. It's full of very valuable information that respects our identities, lives and families as queer women. But take it with a grain of salt and don't regard it as The Bible of Lesbian Conception & Pregnancy. Because there's no such thing. Each woman is different and there is no one-size-fits-all approach.

The Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians: How to Stay Sane and Care for Yourself from Pre-conception through Birth, 2nd Edition Review

The Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians: How to Stay Sane and Care for Yourself from Pre-conception through Birth, 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

Hooray! The second edition of this first-of-its-kind book has even more useful information and is totally up-to-date. The best thing about it is still the author's voice, which is strong and supportive -- and funny -- on every page. This book is infused with the wisdom of someone who's been through it all, back when there weren't any books about it, and is eager to shepherd others through the process.Equally encouraging are the many quotes from other dyke mamas (and mamas-to-be) describing their own experiences, from the just- thinking-about-it stage to actually giving birth.

Some questions this book will help you think through: am I (are we) ready for kids? can I do it alone? how to choose a donor? what is it like, trying to get pregnant? what are my options if I don't get pregnant quickly? how will I handle being pregnant? what kind of birth do I hope for? what is it like for the non-bio mom? and what kind of family will we be in those early days?

In each case the author doesn't tell you what to do, but helps you figure out what YOU want to do.She clearly has her own preferences -- unmedicated birth is best; circumcision sucks; breastfeeding rocks!-- but they are carefully argued, pretty persuasive, and the tone is consistently pro-child and pro-women.

Sensibly, Pepper puts the tough stuff up front: the first chapter is about getting yourself as physically, mentally, financially and legally ready to start a family as you can possibly be. Then it's on to getting the goods, finding out what's going on under the hood, and starting the crazy ride on the conception "rollercoaster."The chapter offering Ten Tips to Keep You Sane during this crazy period is worth the price of the book alone!

These early chapters are the most detailed and probably the ones you'll read over and over, but there are also useful roadmaps to each trimester, as well as a helpful section on sexuality and pregnancy, birth options, and the early weeks with your baby. There's also a comprehensive index and a helpful section on extra resources, from lesbian-friendly sperm banks to useful books to dyke-mama blogs.

In a nice touch, the new edition is dedicated not only to "every lesbian dreaming baby dreams" but also "the many dyke daddies and tranny pops out there." Right on.

As a further bonus, the new cover is gorgeous, as is the photo of the author and her now seven year old daughter -- clearly that rollercoaster was worth it!It all adds to the supportive, happy vibe of this indispensable guide to what the author calls "the wacky world of lesbian conception and pregnancy."
